BIBLICAL MANUSCRIPT FRAGMENT OF A TORAH SCROLL
This scroll comes from Europe and is approximately 150 years old.
Item Description: Hebrew Bible, handwritten Torah scroll on authentic parchment, in ancient Ashkenazi Kabbalistic script (called Vellish script). “Vellish” is another name for Sephardic Ktav, the standard script used by Mizrahi and Yemenite Jews to write Hebrew.
Text includes: Leviticus 27:12–27:34 and Numbers 1:1–5:15. This scroll covers the following topics:
It is one of a series of episodes at the beginning of a book in the desert, dealing with the establishment of the camp of Israel and preparations for the journey from Mount Sinai to the Land of Israel. The census and duties of the priests, the purification of the camp, and the redress of wrongs.
The writing style and script are unique and are no longer found on scrolls written today. No scrolls from this period have been found, and it is extremely important because it is extremely rare, among the earliest examples of Ashkenazi Jewish tradition.
The fragment presented here testifies to various customs regarding its letters.
The scroll is written in ancient script on white leather parchment.
This scroll came from Europe along with other Judaic objects that survived the Holocaust. Despite its age, this scroll is well preserved and in good condition.
